CHINA AND AFRICA

Opportunities and Challenges

CHINESE investment in Africa grew much faster in recent years.

Not only that this country is now Africa trading partner since 1990's when it decided make use on their new policies of foreign investment.

Much has been written of China involvement of African resources, others questioning this friendship and saying that China is not a true friend of Africa.

Critics fear that China is a new colonial power, plundering Africa resources. Africa has a long history of unhappy experiences with outside powers coming to exploit the continent.

Some Africans do believe that what China is doing to day is not different what Colonial powers did, always pretended to be the savior of Africa. Once they get what they want, then likely to forget about Africa.
The growing cooperation between China and the Continent caused a big debate among media practioners,Western Coutries, scholers and other peoples .

Among who critisizing th is US, because now China is her big economic threat.
In her recent speech, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham said "New colonialism threatening the African continent...We saw that during colonial times, it is easy to come in, take out natural resources, pay off leaders and leave," she said, in a thinly veiled swipe at China.

However to some others around the continet including Government leaders, Politician including also China disagree with the criticism that China is extracting African resources without benefiting local residents and given some examples on how China has undertaken a number of projects to the benefit of local communities.

The main sectors that Chinese Companies are focusing on in Africa is  energy, and according to the recent report issued by Ernst & Young and published by Xinhua, Outside direct Investiment by China’s energy and resources industries reached around $239 billion from 2005 to the first half of 2012.

But when you come to the truth who is benefiting, you can get various views , some are saying African coutries are benefiting others saying not because China is coming to Africa looking for resouce-rich , like energy, while African remained as exporters of clothers and phones.

Commenting on this  Dominic Mhiripiri  questioning the friendship of China to Africa,  reffring his article  to the one wrote by Dambisa Moyo June 27, who blamed thoseAfrican Government staying in power by relying on foreign aid, while their resources are taken with other coutries.

Day 2 assignment

YESTERDAY was a wonderful day, We learnt a lot of things on how we can conduct investigation by using internet.
We spent much more time on the investigation by using various webs, social Networks.
Make use of the different Google search option, We managed to find various  information from online sources.
We went further by looking Google map,in my little understanding of internet to be franky this was new subject.
I found that map can be best source of information. You can use map in News reporting.
and  because I wanted to know this in very wide range, I went checking how map can be used in Journalistic Research.
According to the website of Univesity of Chicaco;   Maps with the News is a lively assessment of the role of cartography in American journalism. Tracing the use of maps in American news reporting from the eighteenth century to the 1980s, Mark Monmonier explores why and how journalistic maps have achieved such importance.
After that,
Our Facilitator Mr Peik assigned us to find Infomation from online sources about  Ezekiel Kemboi.
and wanted us to provide information about this man and what are his biggest merit in his fiield and
Why this man has been in the news this week.
Making use of Google search, we found so many information about Ezekiel Kemboi, and We get to know who is this man, his career and so many things about him.
and of courseI didnt know him before.
After doing this tough job we managed to come up with a very good story from our minds, and we  wrote and publish  short commentary.
You  see this story in my blog here.
Thanks Mr Peik once again! the class was so wonderful.

This case real suprising (Ezekiel Kemboi)

Ezekiel Kemboi Cheboi (30) is a Kenyan Olympic and world 3,000m steeplechase champion
He is one of only three men to have won both Olympic and World golds in 2012 Summer Olympics along with Reuben Kosgei and Brimin Kipruto.
This week, 23 October Ezekiel Kemboi has been in the news because his assault charge dropped.
Mr Kemboi, who is a serving police officer, accused by Anne Njeri Otieno who said that she had been attacked with a knife when she declined his sexual advances in June.

The woman now had decided to withdraw the charges citing that she dont want to loose time she want to go back to university to pursue journalism.
Though she denied th she have not been compensated by Kemboi but to me I didnt see a big reason why she decided to forgive him,
In my views, this woman did not help Kenyans to join hands fighting violence against women.
According to IRIN Africa, Sexual violence is increasingly prevalent in Kenya and police statistics show that more than 2,800 cases of rape were reported in 2011 - an increase of close to 500 compared to the previous year.
While here in Tanzana 60 per cent of women reported being regularly physically abused; Kenya is taking a lead from recent research on sexuality and domestic violence.

"I want to go back to university to pursue journalism and I have forgiven Kemboi out of my own free will," Reuters news agency quotes her as saying outside court.

DAY ONE ASSIGNMET

Here on the right Jabir Idrissa, Editor of the Mwanahalis Newspaper, and on the left Ratifa Baranyikwa of Tanzania Daima (Picture by Mr. Johanson Peik from Finland)

THIS  is my second internet related workshop for me, In fact I came to realise that the first workshop was so useful to me
to day I'm not getting hard to use internet.
This training also organized by MISA in collaboration with the VIKES Foundation of Finland; the International Solidarity Foundation of the Union Journalists and other Finnish media organizations.
We are 10 participants coming from media houses, colleges, and universities. In fact it was the great place were we had chance to learn and share diverse experiences.!In fact the class was so wonderful in day one,
Mr Johanson Peik  our facilitator, from Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE Radio Finland showed us how to make a blog, and we started blogging and making new posting to our blogs that we created.
And then showed and tought us on how we can use internet for conducting investigation.

We checked on how to Investigate via internet and we went further by visiting some local and International website, including social Media Networks like Wikileakes, Mashable etc.
We searched the population of Iringa, the phone number of Tanapa, the quotetion of President Jakaya Kikwete when addressing UWT in Dodoma.
I like the way that Mr Peik used to teach us, and now I can be able to search more material via internet.
In short I learnt a lot of things related to internet surfing and blogging. Since the first workshop, I found myself becoming a constant visitor of websites, using it as on of the tools of information.

This internet workshop met and some time exceeded my expectation,
The workshop was an eye-opener for me. I learned a lot on how Investigative Journalism is prospering in the age of media . I didn’t know that it would be that interesting to participate. Our instructor was such a good moderator. The way the questions were done was also fantastic. It keeps you engaged.
I found this course engaging and interesting. Most of all it helped me broaden my knowledge especially on how to get hidden information for Journalistic Research.
This tought me to how to choose right seach words, the right webs,  how to follow the links and how to get fo original sources.
